Yesterday morning as we worked through Matthew 5:17-48, we wrestled with the righteousness that God requires of those who are a part of the kingdom of heaven. What we saw Jesus emphasizing in his Sermon on the Mount was that he accomplished what we could not, so that we could live righteous before God. Jesus therefore, is the only one who defines the way by which we can know God, and it is only through faith in him that we can have access to the Father. He not only fulfilled the Law, but he now is the only one who can interpret it accurately. When we consider his commands then, we need to consider them in light of what he has done, and not in light of what we need to do to earn his favor. I thought this article on moralism was a quick short read that hopefully helps us connect the commands of God to the cross of Christ. Click on the link and enjoy the read!
